App usage analytics

The app uses PostHog EU Cloud to understand whether important app journeys are working. Events cover app opens, decode attempts and outcomes, Collector Check steps, saving collection items, reaching the free collection limit and responding to it, opening report actions, and viewing Pro or subscription screens. They may include installation and session identifiers; product type, match status, whether reference data was available, free-check allowance, whether Pro is active, a broad collection-size band, app and catalogue versions; and technical context supplied by the SDK, such as platform, operating-system version, device model/type, locale and timezone. These identifiers can associate events from the same app installation.

PostHog does not receive the barcode string, stamp or camera image, stamp or object record ID, My Collection/checklist contents, collector observations or notes, Stamp card contents, name, email address, or RevenueCat App User ID from these events. Persistent person profiles and session recording are disabled, but that does not make every event anonymous. On iOS, the SDK can record rapid repeated taps and their screen position to help identify frustrating interactions. Automatic screen-view capture, surveys, feature flags and automatic lifecycle capture are disabled.

We use these events only to monitor reliability, understand adoption, and decide which app features and reference data need improvement. We do not use them for advertising or to track activity across other companies' apps or websites.

As with any internet request, PostHog receives the network address used to deliver the event. The production project discards the client IP address from stored events and location enrichment is disabled. The app does not request GPS or precise-location permission for analytics.

Information we process

The app processes DataMatrix barcode strings on your device to decode and display the information contained in the barcode.

We do not collect barcode data or camera images from your device automatically.

If you use collection/checklist features, that data and your saved observations are stored locally on your device. Stamp card previews are also generated locally on-device. Use Back up to keep a separate copy of your collection. Cloud collection synchronisation is not included in version 5.1.1.

Technical note: the app supports the DataMatrix barcodes printed on modern Royal Mail stamps.

Website analytics and cookies

StampDecoder.app uses Google Analytics 4 to help us understand website visits and which pages are useful. Google Analytics is optional and does not load until you select Accept analytics in the website banner.

If you accept, Google Analytics may process information about the pages you visit, how you reached the site, and your browser or device. Analytics cookies may be stored on your device. We have disabled Google Signals and advertising personalisation in our site configuration.

Your choice is stored in your browser so we can remember it. You can reject analytics or change your choice at any time using Cookie settings. See Google's Privacy Policy for information about Google's processing.

Subscriptions and app functionality

The app uses RevenueCat to manage subscriptions, paywalls, purchase status, and restore-purchase support. RevenueCat may process a generated app user ID, purchase or subscription status, and limited app functionality attributes such as whether a successful scan or decode has happened, when it last happened, its source and product type, whether the result matched the built-in catalogue, and the camera scan count.

These RevenueCat attributes are used for app functionality and support. They do not include barcode strings, stamp images, camera images, or the contents of your My Collection/checklist data.

Support emails and collector reports

Opening a report prepares a draft in your own mail app. You can review or edit it, and nothing is sent unless you choose to send it. The draft may include the item or characteristic you are reporting, relevant barcode text where shown, app/catalogue versions, and text you add. If you send it, we receive your email address and message. We use these to respond and improve the app. Do not include information you do not want to share.

Third-party services

We do not use advertising analytics, data brokers, or cross-app tracking in the app. The app uses PostHog EU Cloud for privacy-light product analytics and RevenueCat for subscription and app-functionality support, as described above. This website uses Google Analytics only after you consent, as described above.

Children

The app is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your choices

You can manage your saved collection in the app and use Back up to keep a separate copy. Removing the app can remove its local collection and preferences, so back up first. Uninstalling does not cancel a subscription; manage that through your Apple or Google store account. Uninstalling also does not itself delete information already processed by service providers. For the website, you can reject analytics when first asked or revisit Cookie settings to change your choice.
